SPECIALS to look out for in November

This summer we will be going back to our peasant roots.  Sourcing and cooking with unusual local, and sometimes long forgotten, produce.  Rural is the word! We will be welcoming summer with spicy dishes like pork knuckle and black bean stew, chicken giblets and various forms of tripe…

The return of the Courgette Flower!  We are growing our own and locally sourcing this beautiful product.  This epitomizes summer for me and I cannot wait to hold the first golden yellow flowers in my hands.  We will be preparing them very simply by battering, frying and serving them with fresh lemon juice and parmesan. YUM!

We have managed to find a local farmer producing organic rabbit!  We will be experimenting with this truly peasant product and the first dish will be the Cacciatore or The Hunter’s Plate which will be a combination of slow cooked rabbit, pork belly, duck and lambs liver.

November sees the launch of the Bar Bar Movie Club!

BAZAAR at the Oude Kerk Museum

Three movies will be screened in the first three weeks of November all related to bicycles, the people travelling on them and
the stories they relate to! In a call to cut down on your carbon footprint we invite you to cycle to these events.

The Triplets of Belleville 3rd of November

This is one of my all time favourite movies.  This is classic French animation with a powerful message and soundtrack. It has a very clever plot and keeps you right on the edge of your seat!  Definitely not an animated movie for kids but for adults willing to stretch their minds…

The Bicycle Thieves 10th of November

This is a 1948 Italian neorealist film that tells the story of a poor man searching the streets of Rome for his stolen bicycle, which he needs to be able to work.  The film is based on the novel by Luigi Bartolini and was given an honorary academy award in 1950 and was deemed the greatest film of its time four years after its release.

The Postman 17th of November

The film tells a fictional story in which real life Chilean Poet Pablo Neruda forms a relationship with a simple postman who learns to love poetry.  Writer, director and actor Massimo Troisi who plays the postman postponed heart surgery to complete the film and a day after completing the film suffered a fatal heart attack.

The movie is a breathtaking work of love!

Dinner will be served form 6Pm and the movie will start at 7Pm.  You are welcome to attend for drinks only and popcorn served gratis!  It is advisable to book as we have limited seating available inside.

The Food, Wine and Design Fair in Hyde Park in JHB.

This is the second year we will be attending and we had a great response at last year’s fair towards the product and culture of Riebeek Kasteel and The Swartland. It also acted as a great tourism tool as we had a lot of visitors form Gauteng experiencing the Riebeek Valley for the first time post the fair!
